AI SEO for dentists: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI

AI SEO for Dentists: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI

Short answer: to show up when patients ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for a dentist, make your practice easy to describe and easy to verify: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent details across directories, clear service pages that answer common questions in plain sentences, genuine reviews, and mentions of your practice on other trusted websites. AI SEO builds on local SEO; it does not replace it.

Why AI search matters for dental practices now

BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer survey found that 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before. At the same time, BrightEdge’s healthcare research reports that Google shows AI Overviews on most health-information searches but rarely on “near me” provider searches, where the map pack still decides. In practice that means two things for a dentist: patients researching treatments see AI answers, and patients choosing a practice still see Google Maps. You need both.

What AI assistants rely on when they recommend a dentist

  • Mentions across the web. Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlate more strongly with visibility in AI Overviews (0.664) than domain rating does (0.326).
  • “Best of” lists. Ahrefs found that “best” lists make up 43.8% of the sources ChatGPT cites. Being included in genuine local and industry lists matters.
  • Clear pages. AI tools quote short, direct answers. A page that says plainly what you offer, who you treat, where you are and how payment works is easier to cite than marketing copy.
  • Rankings still help. seoClarity found a page ranking first in Google is cited in AI Overviews roughly 43% of the time, but Ahrefs also found the share of AI Overview citations coming from the top 10 has fallen, so ranking alone is no longer enough.

A 10-step AI SEO checklist for dentists

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile with the right primary category, every service, hours, photos and a booking link.
  2. Make your details identical everywhere: name, address, phone, hours and website on your site, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and dental directories.
  3. Write one page per service that opens with a two- or three-sentence direct answer, then covers cost factors, candidacy, what to expect and FAQs.
  4. State facts AI tools are asked about: insurance accepted, payment plans, ages seen, languages spoken, emergency availability, parking.
  5. Add structured data: Dentist or LocalBusiness markup with address, hours and doctors, plus FAQ markup on genuine FAQs.
  6. Publish doctor bios with accurate education and memberships, and link them from every clinical page.
  7. Earn genuine reviews steadily and reply to them without confirming patient details.
  8. Get mentioned: local news, community sponsorships, dental society pages and reputable directories.
  9. Ask the AI tools yourself once a month: “best dentist for implants in [city]” and similar. Note who is named and what sources are cited.
  10. Fix what the answers get wrong by correcting the source pages and listings they rely on.

What not to do

  • Do not publish fake reviews or invented statistics. They can be found, and they put your reputation and licence at risk.
  • Do not stuff city names into pages or your business name.
  • Do not create thin “AI pages” that repeat the same text for many cities.
  • Do not expect a guarantee. No one can promise an AI assistant will name your practice.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI SEO for dentists?

It is the work of making a dental practice easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to describe and recommend: accurate listings, clear service pages, structured data, genuine reviews and mentions on trusted sites.

Is AI SEO different from local SEO?

It builds on local SEO. The same foundations matter, plus an extra focus on plain, quotable answers, consistent facts across the web and third-party mentions, which AI tools lean on heavily.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No legitimate service can buy a recommendation in ChatGPT answers. You can improve the signals AI tools use, but no one can guarantee you will be named.

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my practice?

Ask it the questions your patients ask, in your city, once a month, and note who is named and which sources are cited. Our free AI visibility checker gives a quick starting score.
